Resumen: Volume 1 comprises short monographs on about 400 species, providing an exhaustive treatment of the taxonomy, ecology and physiology of individual species. Included in the monographs are descriptions, and many line drawings, photographs and scanning electron micrographs, to aid identification. The ecological sections within the monographs contain information on the geographical distribution of each fungus, macro- and micro-habitats, nutrient requirements, susceptibility to antagonism and predation, and other information of ecological relevance. The monographs are completed by details of the conditions necessary for growth and reproduction, the capacity of the fungus for enzymic degradation, its metabolic products and its pathogenic potential.

Resumen: Volume 2 contains a classification of, and keys to, the genera treated. Most of the volume (pages 19-390) consists of a list of literature references (over 6000) to publications to which reference was made in compiling Volume 1. An index of fungal names is provided.
